明治期の最重要英字新聞Japan Weekly Mail紙復刻版の刊行も順調に進み、第5回配本（1890-94年）が2009年秋に発刊となります。明治２０年代になりＪＷＭ紙は海外向けメディアとして日本を代表する地位を確立、ページ数を大きく増やし、政治、外交、社会から文化面までさらに充実した国際報道を続けます。同時に、日本のメディアとして初めて特約権を得たロイターからの配信や、欧米主要都市に配置した通信員により、日本の報道機関の世界の窓口としての影響力も発揮します。特に今回配本の時代は、1894年に開戦する日清戦争前の緊張する東アジア情勢に関しては、英国系メディアならではの情報網で収集された中国の最新ニュースを西洋諸国から送られてくる情報とともに分析するとともに、日本政府の方針をいち早くレポートし、非常に充実した報道となっています。また、この時期には来日したラフカディオ・ハーンが赴任先の松江、熊本から記事を連載したことも知られています。

今回の別冊には本紙上のデータを使い明治期の生糸貿易に関する研究を進める、井川克彦氏（日本女子大学教授）の解説が書き下ろされます。
