イザベラ・バードとならぶヴィクトリア朝時代の女性旅行家マリアンヌ・ノース（1830-1890）は、今日でもその名を残す英国王立植物園キュー・ガーデンのマリアンヌ・ノース・ギャラリーに収められた膨大な植物画でよく知られています。幼少時代より父の友人であった科学者や知識人と接して育った彼女は、若い頃から家族や父に連れられヨーロッパそして中近東へと旅して回ります。父の亡き後、旅は彼女にとっての生きがいとなり、北南米、シンガポール、インド、オーストラリアなどなど、世界各地を訪れることとなります。日本へも1875年から76年にかけ、横浜、神戸、京都周辺を訪問しています。バードと異なり、旅行記を自ら著すことのなかったノースですが、その情熱は、恵まれた芸術面の才能をいかした植物の写生に向かいます。その才能を評価したチャールズ・ダーウィンが、さらなる旅へと彼女を後押ししたこともあるようです。こうして書き溜められた植物画の一般公開のため、前述のノース・ギャラリーが1882年にオープンしています。彼女の功績を称えた王立植物園は、5種の植物に彼女にちなんだ命名をしています。

本書は、ノース自身が残した膨大な旅の記録を、その死後に妹が全3巻にまとめたものです。彼女自身の旅行での体験や他の女性旅行家の逸話などが挿入されており、ヴィクトリア朝女性旅行家の同時代の記録として代表的な文献です。
