| アメリカでの看護はナイチンゲールの元で学んだ、リンダ・リチャーズやイザベル・ハンプトンにより１９世紀後半に近代化されて行きましたが、その後世界で最も早く看護職の専門養成機関が広がり、２０世紀には大学での看護教育が開始されます。それに伴い看護学生のための教科書や手引き、看護学研究のための学術書や資料が数多く出版されるようになります。１９８０年代にはそれらを幅広くリプリントしたGarland
History of Nursingシリーズが刊行、アメリカ大学学部、大学院での看護学研究、教育の基礎文献として活用されますが、残念ながら、日本国内の教育機関や大学図書館でこのリプリント叢書はほとんど所蔵されることなく、今日絶版となってしまっています。
今回の復刻コレクションは、このシリーズに収録された文献のなかで、今日でもその重要性を失っていない１２点のタイトルを、当初のシリーズ編集者でもあったSusan M. Reverby (Professor of Women's
Studies, Wellesley College) の協力にて厳選、全８巻セットで再刊するものです。看護学史研究や看護教育に必携であるだけでなく、アメリカ女性史研究の資料としても極めて貴重で広範な文献集です。

●コロンビア大学より看護学修士号を受けた最初の看護師で、ジョン・デューイ教育学の影響を受けた看護教授法を確立、戦後の日本の看護改革にあたった保良せきの指導をしたことでも知られるステュアートが、ナイチンゲールから２０世紀の看護学を語った主著。
