| エディション・シナプスではJapan in English（『西洋の語った日本』）等のシリーズにて、19世紀末から20世紀初頭の日本の近代化を見つめた西洋の視線による、様々な日本関連洋書の復刻出版を試みていますが、本企画はこの時代に日本を訪れたキリスト教女性宣教師（宣教師の妻も含む）らによる日本に関する書籍をシリーズ化し復刻するものです。
英米プロテスタントの海外伝道事業が組織化されていった19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけ、多くの女性宣教師が日本含むアジア諸国へ派遣されてゆきます。彼女たちは、各地で男性宣教師とは異なる社会的役割をにない活動を行いますが、日本においてもミッション・スクールの設立や運営に深く関わり、日本・アジアでの女性教育の成立に大きく貢献したことが知られています。教育者でもあった女性宣教師の内には、宣教活動の記録と同時に滞在した日本の文化や生活を、女性ならではの視線で記述し残した者も多く、それらは今日、日本の近代キリスト教史の史料としてだけではなく、教育史、女性史など幅広い日本の近代化や西洋との文化交流史、そしてまたジェンダー研究、英米帝国史研究のための文献として読み直され?

第1回は英国人女性宣教師の著作を収録、第2回以降は米国人女性宣教師の著作を年代順に出版する企画です。
