ローエル天文台を創設し火星人を「発見」したローエルの名前は、20世紀アメリカの異才として現在でも語りつがれおり、日本においても朝日新聞のミレニアム企画「20世紀の100人」の一人として取り上げられています。

このような天文学での名声を得る以前、彼は30代に何度もアジアを訪れ、約3年間日本に滞在し日本・アジア文化に関する多くの記事・論文、そして研究書を発表しています。この日本・アジア研究者としての彼の側面と功績は見落とされがちでしたが、近年、David Strauss著 'Percival LowellーThe Culture and Science of a Boston
Brahmin' (Harvard Unviversity Press, 2001)、 宮崎政明著「知られざるジャパノロジストーローエルの生涯」(丸善ライブラリー)等の出版、そして日本ローエル協会の設立など、日米両国でローエルと彼の目を通した19世紀末の日本やアジアは関心を集め始めています。また、彼の妹でジャポニズム的作品を残した、20世紀初頭の詩人エイミー・ローエルが吸収した兄の異国趣味は、今後さらに注目される文学史、比較文学のテーマでしょう。

今回集成されるこの文献集は、前述のDavid Strauss教授編集によるローエルの初めての著作集で、彼の主著4作の原書(『朝鮮』『極東の魂』『能登』『神秘の日本』)に加え、日本、アジア関連の雑誌論考や新聞記事をほぼすべて網羅します。また、ローエルの妹エイミーに宛てた書簡35点と近年ハーンの曾孫小泉凡氏により発見されたローエルからハーンへ宛てた書簡3点の翻刻も収録されます。
