フィリップ・アリエスによると、ヨーロッパにおいて近代的な子ども観がみられるようになるのは17世紀以降のことであった。確かにイギリスでもそれ以前の子どもはほとんど注目されることのない存在であったようだ。赤ん坊の両手両足をまっすぐに伸ばした状態でミイラのように布切れでぐるぐる巻きにするスウォッドリングとよばれる習俗がみられた、赤ん坊の授乳と養育は乳母任せにする傾向があった、習慣的に厳しい体罰を加えることこそがしつけとみなされた――現代の価値観に沿うものでないとしても、そういった子育て方法には、その時代なりの考え方や必要性もあったのだろう。多く生まれはするものの死亡率が極めて高い子どもに対して、親が大きな関心を持
たなかったとしても無理はなかったのかもしれない。
しかしながらそういった傾向は「子どもの発見」と呼ばれる意識の変化のもと、上流社会から徐々に変化し始める。ピューリタンを中心とした母乳育児の推奨やスウォッドリング批判が長い時間をかけて社会全体に広まり、親は子どもの固有の存在に関心をもち、子どもに対し寛容な距離をもって接するようになるのである。こういった変化の背景にはロックやルソーといった思想家の影響もあろうし、伝統的な家父長制度の漸進的衰退化傾向が観察できるかもしれない。子どもを子どもとして尊重するという意識が、子ども用の衣服や子ども向けの用具類を生み出すこととなった。カンバセーション・ピースと呼ばれる家族の肖像画がブームとなり始めたりするのもこの頃からで、子どもが家族の大切な一員として描き出された。その一方で家内工業を行なう世帯などでは、家業を維持するための重要な労働力として子どもに対する期待は大きくなった。
17世紀以前から『家政書』や『礼儀作法書』の類が書かれ、その流れをくむ『育児書』的なものも、子どもへの関心が増すにつれて多く現れるようになった。本文献集はそういった子どもの教育に関する手引き的論説から、子どもに残す遺言、子どもを巻き込んだ事件簿といったものまで、8世紀前半における「子ども」をキーワードにしたイギリスの文献の集成である。ひとつひとつの資料は特定の個人の名を付したものであっても、この時代の社会生活に広くゆきわたっていた行動様式の基準を示すものとみることができるだろう。子どもにあてたスポットライトは、子どもだけでなく母親や父親の役割、家庭のありよう、地域社会や信仰の意義など、多様な問題を浮かび上がらせもする。入手することが容易でない資料を多く含み、またさまざまな領域にまたがる文献であることが特色といえる。この時期の子ども観を概観するに際して、興味深い資料集となることを確信する。
