◎推薦文◎ シェイクスピア上演史一次資料の饗宴

 『シェイクスピア俳優と上演史』の企画書を見て、私は少なからず興奮している。

 ローレンス・オリヴィエやジョン・ギールグッドといった20世紀の名優がシェイクスピア劇をどのように演じたかは、我々にもかなりよく分る。視聴覚資料がたくさん残っているからである。しかし18世紀や19世紀の俳優については、もちろんそうは行かない。それなら、この時代の名優の演技については何も分らないのかというと、実は決してそうではない。名優たちについては例外なく詳しい伝記が書かれており、時には名優自身が回想録を残している場合もある。それらを読んだら、彼等の演技は具体的に想像できるようになるからだ。ユーリカ・プレスの担当者から、何か面白い企画はないかと尋ねられた時、私は、名優の伝記をまとめて再刊するのはどうだろうと答えた。幸いこの企画はイギリスの出版社の目にとまり、私が最初に思い描いていたよりもはるかに網羅的で充実したかたちで実現することになった。興奮せずにはいられない。

18世紀のイギリス劇壇でいちばん重要な人物は、俳優で劇作家でロンドンの大劇場ドルーリー・レインの支配人でもあったデイヴィッド・ギャリックだが、そのギャリックについての巻には、彼の伝記や彼自身が書いた演劇論はもとより、同時代の人々がこの名優の仕事を論じたエッセイ、彼に宛てた書簡、さてはその時代の定期刊行物の記事など、厖大な資料が集められている。いずれもギャリックやこの時代の演劇についての重要な一次資料だが、それらのほとんどは、これまでは、大きな図書館へ行き、手間をかけて個別に閲覧するほかなかったものだ。ギャリックだけではない。キーンやケンブルといった名優についても、珍しい資料が一冊の本にまとめられて簡単に読めるようになるというのは、まさに夢のような話である。今後18世紀や19世紀のイギリス演劇についての―特にシェイクスピア上演についての―研究を、この資料集成をぬきにして行うことは不可能になるだろう。

私自身も、この叢書を読みながら名優の演技を思い描くのを楽しみにしている。
