19世紀の名優たちの全体像 ---------- 喜志哲雄

『シェイクスピア俳優と上演史』は好評であるらしく、予定を変更して、第3集には、チャールズ・キーン、サミュエル・フェルプス、ウィリアム・チャールズ・マクリーディの三人についての資料を収めることになった。もちろんこの三人は19世紀のイギリスを代表する名優であり、彼等がこの企画から洩れているのがむしろ不思議だったのである。

チャールズ・キーンは、第2集で扱われたエドマンド・キーンの息子だが、かなりの奇人だった父親と違って常識をわきまえた人物だったらしく、劇団の運営においても有能だった。彼についての資料を父親についての資料と読み比べてみるのも面白いだろう。フェルプスの仕事で特に記憶されているのは、シェイクスピア劇を原作通りに演じようとしたことである。この時代のシェイクスピア上演においては、原作を好き勝手に改変するのが普通であり、そういう風潮は現代も認められるから、フェルプスの試みは再評価されてもいいと思われる。だが、三人の中でいちばん興味深い存在はマクリーディである。彼はアメリカやフランスでも活動し、高い評価を得たが、当時のアメリカを代表するエドウィン・フォレストという俳優と非常に仲が悪かった。ある時、彼に敵意を抱いているニューヨークの劇場の観客が騒ぎ始め、とうとう死者が出るという事件が起った。この事件の背景となる状況についてのアメリカ側の資料も収められているのは、非常に有難い。

もちろん、中心になるのはそれぞれの俳優の藝風や演技を論じる資料だが、舞台以外の場所での彼等の活動についての資料もたくさん収められているから、我々はこの三人の全体像を描くことができるようになるに違いない。
