＊特権階級の娯楽であった旅行が、少しずつ中産階級に広がり、ピクチャレスク・ツアーが盛んになり始めた18世紀末に編まれた英国旅行ガイドの嚆矢。イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズからアイルランドまでを網羅。
＊この時代各地を旅し、記録を残したサミュエル・ジョンソン、アーサー・ヤング、トマス・ペナントらの紀行文などを原典に、編者ウィリアム・メイヴァーが編集。
＊旅行者のコンパニオンとして携帯に便利なポケット版として刊行すると同時に、旅をする余裕のない若者や学生のため、英国各地の情報を提供する参考図書を目指した書物。
＊1798年の初版（全5巻）の成功の後、ロンドンとオックスフォード、ケンブリッジ、そして海水浴や温泉など行楽地を収録した巻を加え、全6巻で刊行された増補改訂第2版（1800年）を、ほぼ原寸のポケットサイズで復刻。地名や名所、史跡に関する巻末索引入り。
