●1876年5月10日から11月10まで、アメリカ独立100年を記念して開催されたフィラデルフィア万博は、アメリカの成長と進歩の宣伝を目的としたアメリカの工業製品などの展示とともに、海外からも30か国以上が参加、7つの主要会場を含む広大な敷地には約250のパヴィリオンが作られ、978万人を超える入場者があった。
●日本はウィーン万博に続き2度目の公式参加をはたし、会場内に日本家屋を建て、陶磁器を中心とした工芸品をジャポニスムブーム最中の欧米に紹介した。また本万博は、翌年から日本で開催が始まった「内国勧業博覧会」のモデルとなったことも指摘されている。
●今回まとめられる本万博の初の資料集には、会場で販売されたガイドおよび出展品の公式目録と図入り万博史、そして日本政府の出品目録に『日本史略』と題された同万博用の英文日本紹介冊子を加え、全6点の資料を5巻に収録する。
●西洋近代史研究やアメリカ史、アメリカ文化研究だけでなく、国際文化接触、多文化研究、メディア研究など、多様な視点から研究の進む初期万博研究の基礎資料として必要不可欠な文献集。
