●1925年米国で出版されるや一躍ベストセラーとなり、世界7ヶ国語に翻訳された『武士の娘』の著者エツ・イナガキ・スギモト［杉本鉞子；1873（明治6）年〜1950（昭和2 5）年］の初の著作集。
●代表作A Daughter of the Samurai（邦訳『武士の娘』）とA Daughter of the Narikin『成金の娘』、A Daughter of t he Nohfu『農夫の娘』の「娘3部作」をはじめ、著作のすべてを英語でのみ著し、米国と英国で発表した杉本鉞子の作品すべての初版をカラー図版も含め復刻集成。
●A Daughter of the Samuraiは、ニューヨーク・ジャパンソサイエティーが限定発売した初版特別版にそれ以降の版のカラー図版を加えて復刻。 合わせて、米国移住後に発表した米国の地方新聞の連載記事、雑誌Asiaに10回にわたり連載された『武士の娘』初出時の記事、そして全作品の主要英米新聞の書評や関連記事などの資料を収録。

■杉本鉞子英文著作集を推薦する■ 亀井俊介（東京大学名誉教授・岐阜女子大学教授）
杉本鉞子著A Daughter of the Samuraiの翻訳『武士の娘』をはじめて読んだ時の興奮は、いまも思い出す。私は田舎の高校の多分２年生だった。敗戦からまだ間がなく、貧しい日々の中でアメリカにあこがれ、本を読みあさってアメリカを探っていた。そして小さな古本屋でこの本を見つけたのだ。戦争中の出版でぼろぼろの本だった。が、夢中になって読んだ。戊辰戦争で敗れた越後長岡藩の家老の娘の自伝物語だが、アメリカ人に向かって、武士の精神や生活を語り、日本の社会を語り、結婚して渡米して味わったカルチャー・ショックを語り、人間の「生」を語っていた。アメリカ体験談も新鮮だったが、私は同時に、アメリカ人になったつもりで日本の話を楽しんでもいたと思う。語り口調の翻訳もすばらしかった。
それから間もなく、ルース・ベネディクトの『菊と刀』を読んでいたら、日本の文化を説明するのに『武士の娘』からの引用がたっぷりなされているのに出くわし、驚くと同時に喜んだ。アメリカにも、自分と同じ体験をした読者がいる！という発見をした思いだった。
日本人が英語で書いた自伝というと、私はすぐに内村鑑三のHow I Became a Christian『余は如何にして基督信徒となりし乎』を思い浮かべる。これは見事な精神史でもある。それから日本語で語ったものだが、すぐれた英訳のある『福翁自伝』The Autobiography of Fukuzawa Yukichi（英訳は福沢の孫で鉞子の娘と結婚した清岡暎一）。これは血湧き肉躍る時代史でもある。この２巨人の本の間に『武士の娘』は控えめに位置する。作者はつつましい女性で、ただ懸命に生きた。が、そのつつましさよって、身近な出来事がこまやかに描写され、これは魅力あふれる生活史ともなっている。
杉本鉞子はこの本の評判に支えられ、A Daughter of the Narikin『成金の娘』、A Daughter of the Nohfu『農夫の娘』の「娘３部作」、および日中戦争の深まり行く時代を背景に「兵士の祖母」を語る佳作Grandmother O Kyo『お鏡お祖母さま』といった英文小説をあらわした。どれもいまでは稀覯本である。こんどこれらに雑誌発表の文章なども加えた『杉本鉞子英文著作集』全５巻が復刻版集成で出るという。まさに「西洋へ語った日本」シリーズの先頭を切るのにふさわしい。比較文学、日米文化交渉史を学ぶものとして、嬉しい極みである。
◆杉本鉞子とその英文著作◆
明治維新直後、旧長岡藩家老の家に生まれた杉本鉞子は、厳しい儒教の躾や生き方を身 につけながら育つ。父の死後、長岡を離れ、東京のミッション系女学校に入学。西洋人 教師の影響もありキリスト教に入信した彼女は、その後単身アメリカにわたり日本人実 業家と結婚する。
夫の死後、一時帰国するものの、娘たちの教育のため再度渡米、ニューヨークのコロン ビア大学で日本語を教えると同時に、アメリカの雑誌に日本関連の記事を執筆、文筆家 としてのキャリアを始める。その頃作家クリストファー・モーレーの薦めで、雑誌Asia に自伝的小説を約1年間連載、それが大手出版社Doubleday社によりA Daughter of the Samuraiと題した単行本として1925年に出版される。排日移民法が制定され、一般大衆 の間に反日感情の高まる当時の社会情勢にもかかわらず、この作品はニューヨークタイ ムズ紙などで好意的な書評を得て大成功する。その後20年以上版を重ね、同出版社戦前 の最長ベストセラー作品になった。英米以外でもドイツ、フランス、デンマーク、スウ ェーデン語など7カ国語に翻訳され、日本人が英語で執筆した自伝小説として、もっと も広く西洋社会に親しまれた作品のひとつとなる。
杉本は1928年の帰国後も、日本女性を主人公にした小説を英語で書き続け、昭和初期の 東京で生きるA Daughter of the Narikin『成金の娘』、農村で生きるA Daughter of t he Nohfu『農夫の娘』、戦時色の強くなる日本で愛国心を持ち続けるGrandmother O Ky o『お鏡お祖母さま』といった作品を、米国の一般読者へ送り届ける。一連の作品から は、自らの出自である武士階級だけではなく、異なった階層も題材として取り上げるこ とにより、戦前の日本社会とそこに生きる女性たちの全体像を大局的に伝えようとする 作者の意図が読み取れる。
これら作品のうち、邦訳で読めるのは『武士の娘』（大岩美代訳、中公文庫）と『お鏡 お祖母さま』(大岩美代訳、実業之日本社、昭和16年)だけで、英文版もA Daughter of the Samuraiを除けば、今日スギモト作品の入手は極めて困難になっている。本復刻著 作集は、今後の杉本鉞子研究やその全体像の再評価、さらには日米文化比較・日米文化 交渉史等の研究に大いに役立つものと思われる。
