19世紀に英国およびヨーロッパで発表された、アフリカに関する初期主要文献を集成する新叢書が始まります。アフリカ研究はアジア研究とならび今日もっともダイナミックに展開している地域研究のカテゴリーの一つですが、特に19世紀から２０世紀初頭のアフリカに対する同時代の様々な発言、思想は、植民地主義の確立するこの時代の西欧史の研究に貴重な問題を提起してくれます。また。これら歴史、思想史研究だけでなく、ポスト・コロニアル、カルチュラル・スタディーズなど新しいアプローチでのアフリカ領域の研究も世界各地で試みられております。今回創刊される叢書は、西洋アフリカ研究の原点ともいえる文献を復刊します。多岐にわたる研究の資料として、広く役立てていただければ幸いです。各セット原典の復刻集成に、新序文が書き下ろされます。

英領西アフリカ出身で、英国で教育を受けた法律家Ekra-Agiman (英名：Joseph
Casely
Hayford) は、19世紀から20世紀初頭にかけて、アフリカの主体性を最も明確に擁護した知識人の一人といわれます。現在のガーナに生まれ、英国で法律家の資格を得た後1896年にゴールド・コーストに戻ります。ヨーロッパで教育を受けたこの時代のアフリカ人同様、彼も英国やヨーロッパのアフリカへの侵食に相反する感情を持ちます。英国を国家モデルとしたアフリカ独自の政府の設立を主唱する一方で、英国の西アフリカ統治は進歩でなく後退であり、アフリカの国家意識を阻害し、独自の民主的国家設立の可能性を否定すると考えます。こうして、Hayfordは西アフリカ・ナショナリストのパイオニアの一人となり、1920年のNational
Congress of British West Africa 設立を助けることになります。彼の思想は後の汎アフリカ主義に大きな影響をあたえたと考えら
れています。
本著作集は、彼の発表した３つの主著をまとめます。第一作のGold Coast Native Institutions
は、Hayfordの英国の統治に反対する姿勢を明確にした代表作です。第三作のThe Truth about
the West African Land Question は英国の土地政策に反対するAborigine's
Rights Protection Societyの依頼で執筆されたもので、アフリカにおける近代的国家アイデンティティーの確立と、英帝国の中での自由な政府の設立への強い意志が読み取れます。これら２作に対し、Ethiopia
Unbound は自叙伝的性格の強い文学作品で、英語で出版されたアフリカ人による初めての小説です。アフリカ人の主人公とそのイギリス人の友との対話を通し、アフリカ人や文化の多様性、そして神や精神についての思想を語り、アフリカ近代化への理想と現実を描き出しています。
南アフリカを代表するアフリカ研究者Professor Tom Lodgeによる序文が書き下ろされます。
