明治維新期にイギリス海軍軍医として来日し、退官後は横浜で弁護士としても活躍したディキンズは、アーネス ト・サトウらと親しく交流し、日本文化への造詣を深めて行きます。特に、日本文学を中心に研究を進めたディ キンズは、1866年に百人一首の英訳を発表します。明治維新の二年前に出版されたこの訳書は、日本文学の初め ての本格的英訳とされ、文学史上の記念碑的著作といえます。その後も旺盛な研究活動を続け、竹取物語、忠臣 蔵などを英訳、そして文学研究の集大成とも言える二巻本「古代中世日本語テキスト」、幕末明治の日英外交史 の英国側の記録「英国公使パークス伝」(共著)などを執筆します。また英国帰国後に出会った南方熊楠と親し く交流し、熊楠の協力のもと方丈記を英訳しています。 本ディキンズ全集は、著書の全てを復刻集成すると同時に、ネイチャー誌に掲載されたモースの大森貝塚発見へ の反論記事など、学術誌に投稿された数多くの論文も網羅します。巻頭にはピーター・コーニッキ(ケンブリッ ジ大学教授)によるディキンズ伝が序文として書き下ろされています。(和訳別冊付録)
