著者のナッチング Mary Adelaide Nutting (1858−1948)は、1907年アメリカで初めての看護学の教授としてコロンビア大学に就任、米国に近代看護学と教育を根づかせた最大の功労者として知られます。
共著者ドックLavinia Lloyd Dock (1858−1956)は国際看護協会International
Council of Nursesの事務局長を20年以上の間務めました。また、女権論者として看護婦の地位向上にも尽力し、看護の実践と管理に関する立法に大きな足跡を残しています。
1907年から５年をかけ出版された本書は、第1―2巻(NuttingとDockの共著)で看護をその古代の起源からナイチンゲールの活動や国際赤十字同盟の結成までを扱い、３―４巻(Dock著)ではその後の近代看護学と看護教育の設立を各国別に記述、対象とする地域はヨーロッパから北米、そしてアジア、ニュージーランドにまで及んでいます。
看護学、ナイチンゲール研究に必須の文献であるだけでなく、フェミニストとしての著者の思想が色濃く反映されている本書は、女性史研究にも第1級の価値をもっています。
